Why choose the Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice?

The Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice is offered exclusively by the University of Ulster and forms an integral part of the Graduate Acceleration Programme (GAP). The course content has been creatively designed with the individual needs of aspiring graduates in mind.

GAP is a 26-week work placement programme, supported by the Department for Employment and Learning, which enables graduates to enhance their practical and academic skills. Professional skills in practice is a central theme of the programme and one which is embedded in our graduate certificate.

What is the Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice?

The graduate certificate is a flexible course worth 60 credits enabling you to extend your current knowledge and skills base. The course consists of two core modules which support you in the workplace, and two optional modules offering you a choice of areas to focus your certificate on, such as enterprise, leadership and change, information technology, communications, or managing behaviour.

Where can I study?

If you choose the Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice at the University of Ulster you can study at any of our four campuses: Belfast, Coleraine, Jordanstown or Magee. The majority of the content is online, so while there are a few face-to-face sessions the majority of the work can be completed at your own pace and from any location.

Who will organise my placement?

When you sign up for GAP you will be able to access a list of placement opportunities. The employers who have presented placement opportunities have made a commitment to the graduate programme and are expecting your application. The GAP information pack (available at www.gapni.com) will provide full details.

How much will it cost?

There is currently no charge for the course.

What happens if I secure a job before I finish the graduate certificate?

That’s great – if you secure a job (anywhere in the world) you will have been successful! We will still be keen to support you in completing the graduate certificate online. As a result you will not only have a job, but will also have an additional qualification.

How do I apply for the graduate certificate?

To be entitled to apply you must be actively looking for work and be eligible to claim job seekers allowance. The first step is to sign up for GAP (at www.gapni.com) so that you can apply for a placement. Once you have secured a placement, you will be able to choose where you would like to study. Our staff will be happy to help you with any aspect of your application.
